Biologic Drug Treatments
Biologic prescription drugs consist of human-made proteins designed to zero in on specific receptors in your immune system that trigger inflammation, rather than other treatments that suppress your entire system. They are used to treat conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and lymphoma however they are not a cure for those conditions. Biologic drugs are administered through either intravenous infusions at treatment clinics, at-home injections, or oral tablets. These drugs require frequent monitoring, diagnostic testing and regular communication between you and your dermatologist and our Biologic Coordinators:

What should I know before I start a Biologic drug?
They are usually prescribed only after you’ve tried other medications and treatments and haven’t found any improvement in your condition. Biologic drugs are costly and can be difficult to get financial assistance. As well, biologics may not be suitable with other medical conditions so it’s vital your dermatologist knows about all of your other health conditions before starting. We will arrange for you to see our Public Health and Preventative Medicine Specialist - Dr. Marc Wallace to review all your immunizations and get you as protected as possible prior to starting. You will be required to go for a significant amount of blood work and other diagnostic tests.
How much do these drugs cost?
These drugs are quite costly, however the amount you pay out of pocket depends on a variety of factors. Our Biologic Coordinators will work with Manitoba Health, your private insurance company and the Biologic drug companies financial support program.
What should I do if I experience side effects while on the drug?
Speak to your dermatologist or one of our Biologic Coordinators if you experience any side effects.
How long do I need to be on a Biologic drug?
There is no set time frame for being on these drugs. For many people living with psoriasis or dermatitis, Biologic drugs alleviate their symptoms and for some put their condition in remission. Some are able to taper off the drug slowly at the dermatologist direction, without flare ups while others must remain on these drugs for their lifetime.
